One of the objectives of the EASTRIP World Bank Project is to promote regional integration. Towards this end, the target to enroll foreign students was conceived. So far, Kenya Coast National Polytechnic (KCNP) has enrolled a total of 77 foreign students. The first cohort of 35 students drawn from Uganda, South Sudan and Tanzania completed a six months’ certificate course in Shipping Management in June 2022.
In February 2023, the Polytechnic enrolled 22 trainees from National Institute of Transport (NIT), Tanzania on a one-month course in Solar Photovoltaic & Water Heating (Solar PV). Additionally, the Polytechnic enrolled 20 trainees from Arusha Technical College (ATC), Tanzania in the month of March 2023 to pursue the same course. The trainees were taken through both theory and practical lessons and were awarded certificates of completion. They also got an opportunity to visit the industry: the trainees from NIT visited Moi International Airport Solar Plant in Mombasa; Kenya and those from ATC visited Globeleq; a 41 MW Solar Power Plant in Malindi, Kenya. The trainees appreciated the opportunity to train at KCNP and promised to utilize the skills acquired to positively impact their communities back home.
