Kampala, January 29, 2020 – The Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) in partnership with the People’s Republic of China through the Ministry of Education and the World Bank have announced an offer of 100 scholarships for the next five years for students to train at top Universities and Technical colleges in China.

The offer will commence in the academic year 2020/2021, whereby 20 scholarships will be available for in Technical Vocation Education and Training (TVET) applicants from Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania.

The Scholarship announcement follows the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), on 11th November 2019, between IUCEA, the People’s Republic of China through the Ministry of Education and the World Bank to develop skills in East Africa in the growing economic sectors including but not limited to Agriculture, Energy, ICT, Manufacturing, and Transport and to promote regional integration.

The Scholarship is expected to address the shortage of skills in TVET in East Africa. It will build the capacity of students and teachers to access and improve the quality of TVET programmes in the selected regional Centres of Excellence.

According to the MoU, the IUCEA will implement the Scholarship as part of EASTRIP. The Scholarship will have a Technical Advisory Body under EASTRIP for the period of the Scholarship Program. The Advisory body will be composed of TVET experts with members drawn from China, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania.

The Scholarship is open to both male and female students from Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania under the age of 25 years for undergraduate programs, 35 years for Masters Programs and under the age of 40 years for doctoral programs.

The 20 scholarships are available, annually for five years, to support college students and teachers from Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania to pursue relevant technical and engineering master’s or Ph.D. degrees in top Chinese universities and technical colleges.  To be eligible for the Scholarships, applicants must be employees of an institution hosting EASTRIP Regional Flagship TVET Institutes.
